I've been on an extended stay in L.A. for the last month, and for that I feel incredibly lucky! L.A. is one of those global cities that I've always felt like I needed to explore further. Coming from NYC, it's almost like night and day. The pace of life, weather and people here are very different. I had mild culture shock my first week, but I'd like to think I've settled in quite nicely by now.
A friend and I got into a debate recently when discussing the differences between people in NYC and L.A. I was making a case for how nice people are here in comparison. He pointed out how many times, it feels like people's friendliness isn't genuine. I conceded, and argued that I'd rather be around "fake" nice people than genuinely rude people. It seems like it's been a lot easier for me to make friends out here, but that's just me!
Someone pointed out how my photography has started reflecting the colors and light of L.A. This wasn't a conscious effort on my part, but when I scrolled back through my Instagram and compared December NYC with March in L.A., it was noticeable. There's the obvious juxtaposition of content; sky scrapers vs. palm trees, but it's not just that. My photos from L.A. are so much more colorful in a different way, a lighter way. It's as if I have a new palette.
Last week I was lucky enough to accompany the talented photographer and playwright Annie Lesser on a trip to see the poppy "super bloom". We drove about an hour north to the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve to explore and photograph it. The drive there was stunning in itself. I'm still in awe at how much beauty is in this part of the country.
It's been a month and I still have so much more to explore here! Next on my list are Point Dume and Vasquez Rocks. Do you know any great L.A. sights I should check out? Let me know!
